Research on Assessing and Treating Repetitive Behavior
Session Abstract: Repetitive behavior is a diagnostic characteristic of autism. Not all forms of repetitive behavior are problematic but when it causes injury to one’s self, presents a dangerous situation for others, and/or interferes with skill building then engineering change is warranted. Assessment research has shown that repetitive behavior is sometimes automatically reinforced. This presents substantial clinical challenges. This presentation will examine some research on repetitive self-injury, stereotypy, and higher-level repetitive behavior (e.g., arranging and ordering). Functional assessment, competing-activities assessments, and treatment outcome research will be presented. Behavioral interventions discussed will include differential reinforcement, response blocking, response redirection, and procedural variations for promoting adaptive responding.
